WHO REQUIRES GLUTEN FREE DIET?
Celiac Disease:
It is a serious autoimmune disorder and generally appears due to hereditary factors. It occurs due to intake of gluten rich foods and due to this body’s own immune system considers gluten as foreign substance, which attacks to small intestine. If left untreated, it leads to further health complications to body such as osteoporosis, anemia, infertility, miscarriage, neurological problems, heart diseases, diabetes and so on.
Gluten Intolerance:
Gluten intolerance is also known as Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity or Gluten sensitive enteropathy, which is a condition based on gluten allergy only, while Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder. However symptoms are similar, test reports can diagnose the difference. If Celiac test is negative, but the symptoms occur regularly, your Doctor may diagnose symptom as Gluten intolerance.
Wheat Allergy:
This comes when your body reacts against wheat based products only. There is a difference between Celiac disease and Wheat allergy. Celiac disease occurs due to eating gluten based all the foods, while Wheat allergy occurs due to intake of wheat based products.
Dermatitis herpetiformis
Dermatitis herpetiformis or DH or Duhring’s disease is a skin problem, which occurs due to ingestion of Gluten based foods. Some of the symptoms are itchy skin, itchy bumps, skin rashes, blisters etc. People suffering with celiac disease, very often get appearance of DH. Gluten free diet helps in managing this condition very-well.
DIAGNOSIS
- Physical presence of Symptoms
- Serologic test (ELISA) confirms presence of antibody to IgA and tTG (tissue transglutaminase). This test is widely used to diagnose Celiac disease.
- Along with Serologic test, Biopsy test is also beneficial to detect Celiac disease.
- If diagnostic tests are negative, your Doctor may confirm about Wheat allergy or Gluten intolerance.
